The varying definitions of “1:1 ABM” that you’ll hear out in market will make your head spin.

So we had to speak with someone who has built, scaled and optimized 1:1 ABM at the highest level.

Sandy Walters has ABM experience at Meta, Pegasystems, Citrix and currently Okta and joined our latest Revenue Exchange episode to share her insights.

This edition is supported by Propensity, Folloze and Reachdesk

Propensity is an AI-powered lifecycle marketing platform for personalized B2B orchestration.

Folloze AI can draft your ABM campaign in an hour. Folloze deploys it live, per account.

Reachdesk helps B2B teams deliver moments that matter with global gifting and swag.

ABM = Your Account Investment Strategy

At ForgeX, we've been pushing this for years = ABM is an account investment strategy.

You build and maintain a Target Account Portfolio of named accounts, and each account gets a different level of human capacity, existing resources and budget based on its strategic importance, revenue potential and your TAM.

1:1 ABM sits at the very top of that investment in our Modernized ABM Deployment Models.

1:1 sits at the top of the ABM hierarchy: the ForgeX deployment model pyramid, with Okta, Meta and Pega marked where Sandy Walters has run 1:1 ABM

Think of your 1:1 accounts as blue chip investments. You have extremely high confidence in their revenue potential, you make a concentrated investment, and you take on a LOT of risk.

Per our 2026 AI in ABM Benchmark Report, 62% of ABM teams say they run 1:1 ABM.....

And as AI keeps lifting executional constraints, deciding where your investment goes only gets MORE important.

1:1 ABM commands the highest per-account investment in human capacity, resources and budget

Relative investment per account across the ForgeX ABM Deployment Models

1. You Cannot Deploy 1:1 ABM to 1000s Of Accounts

When leadership asks “how many accounts one practitioner can cover”, Sandy flips the question back on them:

❝

"Let's not start with the number of accounts, but let's start with what is the experience that we're looking to deliver?"

Sandy Walters, ABM at Okta

If she HAS to put a number on it:

❝

"I would say 5 accounts is the max if I were to put a number on it."

Sandy Walters, ABM at Okta

Here's why the math is mathing on her accounts:

1.) Multiple Opportunities per Account = usually at least 2, and she has seen up to 4, often across multiple business units in one account.

2.) Deal Sizes per Opportunity = "almost always north of a million dollars."

3.) ABM Program Timeline = "At least a nine-month strategy... at the very least."

Defining characteristics of a 1:1 program: 5 accounts per ABM lead, $1M+ deals, 2 to 4 opportunities per account, 1 to 2 accounts per AE, 9+ month strategy

This lines up almost exactly with what we've seen in our ForgeX Benchmark Audits. For example, one Enterprise ABM practitioner at a +$19B ARR organization was covering 6 accounts at a time, with a $9M ACV.

2. Sales and Marketing Need to Perform Like an Orchestra

Sandy's definition of 1:1 ABM starts with sales:

❝

"It really is a tight partnership with sales, because as sales is having their sales motion, marketing is having their marketing motion, we need to be singing the same tune, and we need to be on the same track."

Sandy Walters, ABM at Okta

This is exactly why we say leading Account-Based GTM teams perform like an orchestra in our Cross-functional Collaboration Framework.

All revenue teams each play a different part, and the program falls apart when one section is off.

1:1 ABM requires the full GTM orchestra, with AI wrapped around every section

The ForgeX GTM Orchestra, from our Cross-functional Collaboration Framework

When you're only covering a handful of accounts, that dynamic completely shifts. Marketing, sales and CS act as one micro “GTM unit” or “pod” around each account.

Here's how Sandy runs it:

1.) Sales Coverage Mirrors Marketing Coverage = AEs on her programs own one or two accounts ("I've seen no more than two"), with product marketing and customer success deeply involved too.

2.) A Weekly Sync per Account = "Once a week with each account just to understand what is happening in the account, what conversations are sales having."

3.) Sales Is the Source of Truth = "Sales will always know more than me. They're talking to their contacts on a daily basis."

When I asked her for the ONE thing that crushes in 1:1 ABM:

❝

"The success of any ABM program is really the stickiness and the partnership with sales... it's not a marketing motion, it's not a sales motion, it's a marketing + sales motion."
